Fish fraud: What's on the menu often isn't what's on your plate

(CNN) — If you splurge on the sea bass or snapper, you may not always be getting what you pay for, even at the fanciest restaurants and upscale fish markets.

There’s something, well, fishy going on with certain favorite fish dishes, according to a new study from the conservation group Oceana.

DNA tests showed that about 21% of the fish researchers sampled was not what it was called on the label or menu. That’s despite nearly a decade of investigations, more regulations and Americans’ appetites growing beyond fish sticks and tuna surprise.

“Consumers are getting ripped off,” said Beth Lowell, Oceana’s deputy vice president. Lowell said this isn’t an isolated problem. Her organization tested more than 400 samples from 277 locations in 24 states and in the District of Columbia. Oceana did not name the markets, stores and restaurants where it purchased the samples.

Among the samples they tested, seafood was more frequently mislabeled in restaurants and at smaller markets than in larger grocery chains. One out of three stores and restaurants visited by the investigative team sold at least one mislabeled item.

Favorites like sea bass and snapper had some of the highest rates of mislabeling. Sea bass was mislabeled 55% of the time and snapper 42% of the time, Oceana’s tests showed. Often, instead of sea bass, they’d get giant perch or Nile tilapia, fish that should be less expensive and is considered lower quality. Dover sole they tested was actually walleye. Lavender jobfish had been substituted for Florida snapper.

Where Management and Leadership Skills Meet

I have written several times on the vast difference between managing and leading. Managing is about “stuff’, budgets, inventory, buildings, executing plans, etc. Leading is about people and only about people.

Simply put, if you’re doing it for your business it’s managing. If you’re doing it for your people then it’s leadership.

When what you’re doing is good for the organization AND a person or persons it’s what I call Manleaship.

The skill sets and more importantly the mindset of managers and leaders are almost completely different. It is very common in business that a person is either a manager or leader but not both.

A business or organization that has people with good management skills and other people with good leadership skills can do okay, but only okay. A business or organization that has a person, or hopefully people, who have good management skills combined with good leadership skills can do better than okay…much much better.

Managers likely know and understand the skills and abilities of their people. Managers, and I DO NOT mean this in a negative sense, tend to look at their people as assets or resources which in some sense they are. But leaders, especially Authentic Leaders and especially, especially, Authentic Servant Leaders look at their people as people, living breathing people with wants and needs, and challenges with a life outside of the workplace.

Economic headwinds threaten to dampen outlook for Canada's big banks, analysts say

Canada’s big banks are already coming off a quarter that saw their capital-markets businesses hit hard by market volatility

Canada’s biggest banks could feel the pinch from a weakening domestic economy, but analysts say it is too early to determine how severe that impact might be.

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced it was holding its key interest rate at 1.75 per cent, saying an anticipated economic slowdown in the fourth quarter had been “sharper and more broadly based” than expected.

“After growing at a pace of 1.8 per cent in 2018, it now appears that the economy will be weaker in the first half of 2019 than the Bank projected in January,” the BoC said.

Trudeau's verbal porridge and serene smile have carried him along. Until now: Neil Macdonald

He either doesn’t think the public deserves a straight answer, or just isn’t capable of delivering one

If you’re looking for some instructive reading, go look up an aggregation of utterances by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Some are already famous for their loopiness: budgets balance themselves, the government shouldn’t call honour killings barbaric, we need to rethink the definitions of space and time, we should say “peoplekind” instead of “mankind” (he may actually have been making fun of himself with that one).

Most, though, are just syrupy, unmemorable banalities about values and optimism and respect and caring for one another.

Here's Where to Find the World's Super Rich, From Paris to Tokyo

With their private jets and multiple houses, the world’s mega-rich are the ultimate globetrotters.

Yet about half of this elite population have their main residences within a group of just 10 cities, according to Knight Frank’s 2019 Wealth Report, which lists London, Tokyo and Singapore as home to the most people worth at least $30 million. Although the U.S. is the world’s largest economy, New York is its only city in the real estate brokerage’s top 10.

Matt Gurney: A brutally clear Philpott leaves no room for Liberal spin

Jane Philpott is a Canadian politician and doctor who represents the driving of Markham-Stouffville in the House of Commons. Philpott, the member of the Liberal Party, was elected for the first time in the federal elections of 2015 and was appointed to the Cabinet of the 29th Ministry of Canada, headed by Justin Trudeau, on November 4, 2015. On March 4, 2019, Philpott resigned his cabinet. Position as President of the Treasury Board on the SNC-Lavalin scandal.

You cannot ignore the harsh reality. Therefore, it is presumed that Philpott resigned due to evidence that the government acted against the rule of law

Philpott when resigning did not leave quietly. Being that he was going out the door, he sent a message to the prime minister. With accuracy, a letter that also shared openly in their social media channels.
