No matter how many times I step on to the Royal Military College of Canada's campus, I am always stunned by its beauty and regalness.
The natural setting mixed with the historical architecture evokes nostalgia in me. I'm not sure where it comes from, but it shows up every time I'm there.
This time around, I captured several pictures.
You can see a sample of the photo set on my personal website: http://jamesalexandermichie.com/little-taste-royal-military-college-canada/

My Take on Sports Trades and Their Impact
Sometimes we forget that being a professional athlete is a job. It's a job performed by human beings. So when a trade occurs, it's easy to lose sight that a person just switched companies--moving from a place, a group of people, a city--and their life has been turned upside down.

Ken Hitchcock Says Farewell
When it comes to sports, most fans have short memories, especially of coaches. And that's too bad.
Coaching is a tireless job that likely doesn't receive the respect it's due. To be great, these coaches are often the first in the building and the last ones out. They deal with interpersonal issues every day. And, often sacrifice time with their family in order to prepare for upcoming games.

Dow Jones Now At Record High
"We've scaled this peak. We're going to enjoy this view for a while and hit the pause button." - Joe Quinlan, chief market strategist at U.S. Trust.
Just what peak is Joe talking about exactly? It's the Dow Jones from the 20,000 point view. This is noteworthy because it's the highest value the Dow has ever reached. It's taken nearly three months of jostling, but the index finally pushed through the record threshold.
Will it stay? That remains to be seen. Of course, there are varied opinions on the strength of the U.S. economy, but for now the Bulls are revelling in all their glory.

Adam Bighill Off to the NFL
Adam Bighill has signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. In responding to the news, Wally Buono hit the nail on the head when he said, “I’m happy for Biggie and I’m sad for our fans and our organization." Bittersweet is my reaction.
Bighill was an amazing player to watch. He was not only elite, but he and Solomon Eliminian also formed the heart and soul of the BC Lions defense. From that stand point, it is very hard to see him go.
But, it's not like he went to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He's now a Saint, and playing in the NFL. That is an amazing accomplishment for an undersized linebacker. I'm excited to see how it goes.
I'm rooting for you Biggie!

You Can Make It Happen: Cameron Wake is Proof
If the vision is big enough and the desire continues to be fed, great things can be accomplished. Cameron Wake is living proof of this. Wake serves as a great reminder of the power of intention and relentless pursuit (excuse the pun).
This passage from a recent feature article on Wake tells you everything you need to know:
Few people in NFL history have been knocked down as much as Wake was before he even had a foothold in the league. Long ago, the so-called experts determined he didn’t belong. Yet, here he still is, a perennial Pro Bowler showing the doubters what it truly means to be undefeated. Wake has been an inspiration to his team because of how hard he worked to establish himself as an NFL baller, and the determination he showed in making it all the way back after suffering a serious injury, one that has either ended or irreparably damaged the careers of many cats much younger than him. Wake simply keeps on going.

Youth Hockey: There is More Than One Way to Pursue Your Dreams
Image credit: Kasey Eriksen via Flickr Creative Commons |
It's a misnomer that Major Junior hockey is the way to make it to the NHL. Too often is the thinking in youth hockey that a player must follow that path in order to achieve their dreams.
The fact is that more often than not, players don't reach the NHL, even if they play Major Junior. So, their dreams may have to expand and morph. That's the beautiful opportunity presented by Junior A hockey.
Players who compete in Junior A, instead of Major Junior are eligible to play collegiate hockey, as they do not receive any stipend for their play -- a difference from Major Junior. Therefore, players who follow this alternate path toward their hockey dreams are also carving out another future along the way. If hockey doesn't work out, they'll have a university education they can fall back on.
And, as a recent article in the Globe and Mail points out, Junior A is fast becoming a strong pipeline of NHL talent.
Let me be clear, I'm not arguing against Major Junior hockey. It is an amazing league. I'm simply stating there are multiple avenues to pursuing your NHL dream--each offering different opportunities.
