Diane Francis: New Tory leader will be the beginning of the end for Justin Trudeau

It’s time to get some grown-ups in Ottawa

Next week, a new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada will be selected, and will become the next prime minister of Canada.

I state this with such confidence for two reasons: the Bloc Québécois leader has signalled that he will support a non-confidence motion to bring about an election, and polls show that Canadians want change.

Canadians are fed up with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The latest scandal involving WE Charity illustrates why: Canada, like WE, is government-by-selfie run by publicity-hungry and telegenic spokesmen posturing about saving the planet. Like the Kielburger brothers, the prime minister and his cabinet combine the business model of a charity, which is based on getting other people’s money, with the spending habits of an entitled trust fund kid.

The Kielburger brothers nearly landed a federal contract worth almost $1 billion, with the support of Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau. Recent parliamentary hearings revealed that members of the Trudeau and Morneau families accepted junkets or speaking fees from WE. Despite that, the two leaders failed to recuse themselves from the approval process.

There was virtually no due diligence, no competing bids and, worse, no need for the contract in the first place, as other government programs could have been used to fill the void. As a result, both Trudeau and Morneau are under investigation for conflict of interest and ethics violations.

It’s important to note that Canada has handled the COVID-19 crisis well, but the job was done by the country’s premiers — who govern the country’s health-care systems — not the prime minister.
