Leslyn Lewis: Liberals try to pull bait-and-switch to take our minds off ineptness of the government

It is seen that instead of economic stability, Canadians have been given a plan that promised free money to all who gave up their freedoms for Trudeau’s paternalistic protection. And it is necessary to mention that five weeks ago, Justin Trudeau prorogued Parliament in a blatant attempt to evade scrutiny and accountability.

The WE scandal was undoubtedly dominating the headlines and its handpicked finance minister had just resigned, with parliamentary committees on the trail of one of the biggest scandals in Canadian history. Yet despite undeniable scrutiny, Trudeau made no statement of transparency or of restoring public trust.

In fact, instead, surprisingly with five weeks to prepare, both the throne speech and his totally unnecessary national speech showed no interest in changing course.

Much to be desired

Indeed, it is well known that instead of taking bold steps to address the pandemic and likewise rebuild the Canadian economy by providing solutions to the economic and social problems facing the nation, they instead gave a long list of resurrected topics that point to virtues. Likewise, the speech was devoid of details and barely went beyond recapitulating the 2016 budget; it certainly did not justify the closure of Parliament. Meanwhile, the Governor General’s office was used to evade government accountability, canceling committees that worked to provide taxpayers with answers about the allocation of millions of tax dollars and disputes involving Trudeau’s friends and family.

Parliament is believed to have been extended to deny Canadians the right to know what happened in the WE scandal. And it is that during the period in which the House of Commons was closed, the executives of WE said they would close their Canadian operations and sell their Canadian assets. Canadians are still waiting for full answers on what happened.

Meanwhile, as for COVID-19, it had already been used as an excuse to shut down Parliament, at a time when we needed good and responsible governance more than ever. The throne speech was a bait and switch attempt to get our minds off the ineptitude of the current government and to focus attention on the benefits that Trudeau will provide, conveniently just before the next election is called.
