Rex Murphy: Can Justin Trudeau ever say anything good about Canada?

The news equivalent of the discovery of relativity

Here in Canada it drew comment from that otherwise invisible man, Jagmeet Singh, one-time leader of the NDP and now chief enabler of the Trudeau Liberal government. He heard from sad Meghan’s words that it was time for the whole English monarchy to go down. «There’s no benefit to them and now even more so with concerns about racism in the institution that were raised, and pressures that were placed on Meghan Markle.» Poor Meghan. Justin Trudeau didn’t want to make any direct comment on «what’s going on over in the U. » «There are many institutions that we have in this country , including that big building right across the street from us that has and is built around a system of colonialism, of discrimination, of systemic racism in all of our institutions».

One such person was Pierre Elliott Trudeau. But to Justin Trudeau, it is not a place of honour, of pride or accomplishment. «It has and is built around a system of colonialism, of discrimination, of systemic racism in all of our institutions». No one with a serious moral heart would bear to be seen going into such a building, and certainly not presiding as prime minister over it.

Trudeau wasn’t asserting that Parliament, as any major institution spanning the generations, had imperfections, various moral failures, or had been the site of debates that, in this present day, would be utterly out of bounds.

The prime minister may feel that his constant cataloguing of Canada’s sins, and his fever for apologizing for every failure before his political incarnation, suits the temper of these social justice, woke times. I’d call a «sackcloth and ashes» style of leadership, containing not a little moral preening and clearly meant to imply that the one crying out for contrition, is absolutely without the need for it himself. I just hope Oprah is not looking for another interview.
