Stress Less: Tech Companies In The Mental Health Space Are Finally Going Mainstream

GETTY

It is easy to feel anxious, stressed and mentally exhausted in a world of hyperconnectivity and always active media. You could say that if you are not worried about an economic recession, you may be worried if the next virus outbreak will arrive in your local city or town. In addition, it is not necessary to leave aside an extremely important fact and that is a year of elections, so all the joys of partisan politics will probably bring great emotions as November approaches.

Now, it is not surprising that anxiety affects more than 40 million Americans, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

What is more worrying is that a 2019 report cites that more than 56% of American adults who have a mental illness have not received treatment.

Competition to reassure more people

Certainly, there are many factors working against us, however, it is encouraging about the future to know that there is an army of dedicated entrepreneurs and mental health professionals competing to reassure more people. This includes the growing field of psychiatrists, psychologists and a wide range of medical experts who are adopting new technologies to reach the new patients who need it.

Therefore, it has been expressed that this year could be the year that new mental health companies really become general, for some good reasons.

In this way, it is important to recognize that simple discussion about mental health has evolved from being an issue that was often swept under the carpet to be the center of attention in television commercials. And the stigmas associated with mental health have simply changed in recent years.

Examples of this could be, the Olympic Michael Phelps can be seen in the television commercials of Talkspace, a message-based therapy platform. NBA star Kevin Love wrote a deeply honest piece about his mental health challenges. More recently, sports icon Lebron James has partnered with the application of Calm meditation, promoting the importance of mental health.

In addition, interest in the mental health space of the investment community continues to translate into financing. Some estimates suggest that about one billion dollars in venture capital have been deployed in this space in recent years.
