A Blocker Moves to the Pandemic’s Front Line

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is a Canadian soccer guard for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Soccer League (NFL). He was drafted by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at McGill University in Montreal Quebec Canada. He is the first medical school graduate to play in the NFL.

Notably, less than three months after helping the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory as their starting right guard, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is using his doctorate in medicine fighting the coronavirus outbreak in a long-standing care facility term in Quebec. Without a doubt, it is a blockade to the pandemic.

Likewise, according to the player, three days before the Super Bowl LIV in February, a journalist asked him what he thought about the coronavirus and at that time, he had read a little and knew what type of virus it was and that there were a few thousand cases in China, however, he indicated to the reporter that he was trying to focus on soccer for the most important game of his life.

Helping the world

It is worth mentioning that a few days ago, officials from the Ministry of Health began a campaign to recruit health professionals, especially medical and nursing students. So the player thought that now it would be possible for him to come back and help. Which he assures that he had already wanted, but when it is real, he hits you, with the gravity involved.

Therefore, he had to consult with the Chiefs from the point of view of the contract. He says they have been amazing since they were, in fact, proud of the fact that he wanted to help and indicated that they would support him.

Playing in the Super Bowl versus going back to the medical system during a pandemic is totally different. In February, he knew that more than 100 million people were going to be watching and he wanted to win. When you go to help, it’s more about your duty as a doctor and a citizen. This is not the time to be the hero and be impulsive. You have to do it the right way. You really should take this seriously when it comes to washing your hands, not touching anything. But when you are in a long-term care facility where there are cases, you know for sure that you will be exposed if you don’t take those appropriate steps. You know there are risks involved.
