American International gets its first Atlantic Hockey title and the NCAA berth. And it is that Hugo Reinhardt scored a goal in the power play 1:16 in overtime and as a result, American International won its first Atlantic Hockey championship with a 3–2 victory Saturday night at Niagara in Buffalo, New York.
It is necessary to mention that this victory also ensures the first place in the NCAA tournament for the Yellow Jackets (22–16–1).
For their part, Janis Jaks and Martin Mellberg also scored for the AIC, the latter with 1 second remaining in the second period to send the Yellow Jackets to the dressing room with a 2–1 advantage.
Relevant events
During the match, Kris Spriggs scored 6:16 in the third period to match the Purple Eagles. However, Luke Edgerton of Niagara received a stumbling penalty with 35 seconds left in the regulation, and Reinhardt and the Yellow Jackets charged him early in the extra session.
While Zackarias Skog made 22 saves for AIC and was named MVP of the tournament.
An important fact to mention is that AIC had never passed the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Hockey tournament before this season. Being that the Yellow Jackets made history with the victory of last weekend’s three-game series against the Army at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, then they advanced with Friday night’s victory 3–2 against Robert Morris when Blake Christensen scored in extra time.
In such way, the champions of the regular season of Atlantic Hockey never finished higher than the eighth before this season, and the 15 victories of last season were the highest as a program of Division 1 before this season.
