GOLDSTEIN: Politicians have lost the moral authority to lead in a pandemic

How far can the political leaders of rule-breaking politicians push law-abiding citizens to follow pandemic lockdown rules which seem increasingly arbitrary, nonsensical and unfair. «Don’t go to church» coming from governments whose members flew out of the country for sun and fun.

Finally, after almost a year into this pandemic, our politicians have not yet found a way to protect seniors and the vulnerable living in long-term care. Our governments are already pushing the limits of what people in a democracy will tolerate. They cannot resort to what a dictatorship like China did to defeat COVID-19 in Wuhan, the original epicentre of the pandemic, in December 2019. No matter what we do, more people will die, either because of the pandemic, or the measures taken in response to the pandemic.

This is the moment when our leaders need to lead.
