Gabor Mate after 10 years makes an update of his book "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction" | CBC Radio

Gabor Maté is a doctor and writer, author of several books, specializes in the study and treatment of addictions, attention deficit disorder and early experiences in childhood. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1944 but in 1956 he emigrated to Canada with his family as a consequence of the Hungarian Revolution. Over the course of his life, one of his greatest achievements was obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of British Columbia and a teaching degree from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. In addition to this, Maté worked as a teacher in the areas of English and literature in a high school, but at one point in his life, he made the decision to return to university to pursue a career in medicine.

Similarly, he became a well-known author of books and the subject on which his books focus is the impact of childhood on the physical and mental health of individuals through neurological and psychological mechanisms, which he considers necessary for the social change. In the book In the Realm of the Hungry Ghosts proposes new approaches to the treatment of addictions based on the understanding of the socio-economic and biological roots of addiction. It is also important to mention that Maté, for more than a decade, was working with addicts belonging to the Downtown Eastside neighborhood of Vancouver and therefore in his book he narrates the lives of people who fight against addiction.
