Coronavirus: Why everyone was wrong

An article was published which was posted in the Swiss magazine Weltwoche (World Week) on June 10. It should be noted that the author of the same, Beda M Stadler is the former director of the Institute of Immunology of the University of Bern, biologist and professor emeritus. Likewise, Stadler is an important medical professional in Switzerland, who has been said to like using provocative language, which however should not be a reason to discourage the extremely important points she makes.

This being the case, it must be said that this article is about Switzerland, however, it does not suggest that the situation is exactly the same worldwide. In this way, it is suggested to read the following article until the end, because Stadler makes crucial points about the tests for Sars-CoV-2.

Also, the coronavirus may be slowly withdrawing. In fact, experts have lost basic connections. The immune response against the virus is much stronger than we thought.

Balance of the situation

It is necessary to indicate that this is not an accusation, but a ruthless balance of what would be the current situation. In this way, it must be clarified that it was an error to affirm that this virus was new. Furthermore, it was even more incorrect to state that the population would no longer have any immunity against this virus. In addition to this, it is also established as a resounding error to affirm that someone could have Covid-19 without any symptoms at all or even transmit the disease without showing any symptoms.

Having said that, it is worth mentioning that at the end of 2019, a coronavirus, considered to be new, was detected in China. When the gene sequence, that is, the model of this virus, was identified, and the Sars identified in 2002, that is, Sars-CoV-2, was given a similar name, we should have already wondered to what extent it is related to others coronaviruses, which can make humans sick.

That being the case, it is now clear that Sars-Cov-2 is not so new, but simply a seasonal cold virus that mutates and disappears in the summer, as all cold viruses do, which is what we are observing worldwide at this time. Flu viruses mutate significantly more, by the way, and no one would ever claim that a new strain of the flu virus was entirely new.

It should be noted that in winter when the flu and other colds circulate again, we can kiss again a little less, and we must wash our hands even without a virus present. And yet, people who get sick can put on their masks to show others what they have learned from this pandemic. And if we have not yet learned to protect our groups at risk, we will have to wait for a vaccine that, hopefully, will also be effective in people at risk.
